What is the HAB?
The Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) is an assessment tool designed to measure natural abilities through a series of objective work samples. It helps individuals understand their strengths and how they align with career and educational choices. The assessment consists of 19 virtual exercises that take about three hours to complete, and results are provided in a detailed report. Click here to learn more.
How I Use the HAB to Help Clients
As a Highlands Ability Battery (HAB) Certified Consultant, I don’t just hand over scores—I translate the results into practical, life-shaping guidance. Here’s how I use HAB results to specifically help clients:
1. Decode How the Client’s Mind Naturally Works
The HAB measures abilities, not skills or personality. As I explain:
-
- How the client solves problems (e.g., sequential vs. random)
- How they think and learn best (e.g., verbal, visual, conceptual)
- How quickly and deeply they process information
This gives clients language for something they’ve always felt but never articulated: “Oh—that’s why that job/school setup exhausted me.”
2. Identify Strengths to Leverage (Not Just “Improve Weaknesses”)
I help clients:
-
- Spot top abilities that energize them
- Understand which tasks feel easy because they align with natural wiring
- Stop wasting effort trying to “fix” non-strengths
Result: Clients shift from self-criticism to strategic self-use.
3. Explain Persistent Frustrations and Burnout
Using HAB results, I pinpoint:
-
- Why certain environments drain the client
- Why they clash with specific roles, managers, or systems
- Why “trying harder” hasn’t worked
This reframes past struggles as misalignment, not failure.
4. Guide Career and Role Decisions (Very Specifically)
Instead of vague career advice, I:
-
- Match abilities to types of work, not just job titles
- Identify roles the client will naturally excel in
- Flag roles that look good on paper but will be draining long-term
Examples:
-
- High Conceptual → strategy, innovation, big-picture roles
- High Spatial → design, engineering, systems thinking
- High Idea Flow → entrepreneurship, problem-solving, ideation
5. Improve Communication & Team Dynamics
I use results to help clients:
-
- Understand how they communicate vs. how others do
- Adjust expectations with coworkers, partners, or managers
- Reduce conflict caused by different thinking styles
This is especially powerful for leaders, couples, and teams.
6. Support Major Life Transitions
The HAB is often used during:
-
- Career changes
- College or major-choice decisions
- Mid-career reinvention
- Post-burnout recovery
I help clients:
-
- Make decisions aligned with long-term energy and satisfaction
- Avoid repeating old patterns in new settings
7. Build Confidence Through Self-Understanding
Perhaps the biggest impact:
-
- Clients gain permission to be who they are
- They stop comparing themselves to people wired differently
- They gain clarity, relief, and direction
Many clients say:
“I finally understand myself—and I’m not broken.”
Bottom Line
As a Highlands Certified Consultant, I use HAB results to help clients:
-
- Understand their natural abilities
- Make aligned career and life choices
- Reduce frustration and burnout
- Communicate and work more effectively
- Build confidence rooted in how they’re actually wired
